Staying at the Most Haunted Reviewed Hotel in the United States Brenna Tyler
How-do-you-do, guys and dolls! Welcome dorsum to Looking, the only show where Russell Tovey cooking y'all breakfast naked is a bad thing. When final we left our Three Musketeers, they were celebrating Halloween in February, not signing up for karaoke, and giving empathetic audience members anxiety rashes.
"Looking for a Plot" was… well, it was quite something. I in one case read that you can actually gauge the quality of a testify by how it handles death, and this episode actually puts that theory to the exam. It never devolved into grand speeches or operatic bouts of emotion, instead nestling yet another truth near the human condition into the subtle, low cardinal universe that information technology has worked hard to build over the by flavour and a half. But I'grand getting ahead of myself.
The episode opens with the gang eating breakfast at a local diner, recovering from the Kafkaesque nightmare that was concluding week's Halloween party. Evidently the tequila-fueled freak show that was Patrick Murray (Jonathan Groff) did not end when the episode did. As he pieces together his blurry memories, information technology'due south less The Hangover and more Existent World: Tampa Bay.
Included among Patty's offscreen Halloween festivities were ane) puking all over Eddie'south hobbit feet and two) calling Ginger Roger a "Truvia whore." At least the night ended before he could treat everyone to a drunken karaoke rendition of "You Oughta Know." Now that's a party killer.
While Patrick slowly pieces together the clinically depressing puzzle that was his night, Doris (Lauren Weedman) texts Malik (Bashir Salahuddin) non-stop, even shoving her phone under her shirt to send the earth's blurriest nude. Dom (Murray Bartlett) confiscates her phone before things get out of hand. This is HBO. If y'all really want to come across boobs, plough on literally whatsoever other prove.
Doris' phone buzzes again, but it's something slightly more depressing than a mid-morning dick flick: her father has died. Anybody laughs at first, thinking she'southward spinning one of her classic Deadpan Doris yarns, merely the truth sinks in fast.
Oh, and Agustín (Frankie J. Alvarez) was at that place. One line pays more than than none. Dom should keep that in mind.
Dom and Doris take a road trip to Modesto for the funeral. On the drive, they reminisce about how her dad desperately wanted her to marry Dom, even after he came out. They talk for a scrap about how she didn't desire Malik to come to the funeral because she doesn't think she'due south prepare for that. Patrick teleports into the backseat to request a tour of the Frito-Lay factory and remind people that he's the nearly important grapheme in the show.
At a rest finish, Patrick asks Doris about her male parent, and she tells him a story nearly how they'd go on nightly drives to avert her alcoholic mom. Patrick complains that her childhood seems worse than his, because he is medically incapable of talking about somebody other than himself. But Doris powers through, providing us with a little bit of background about why she closes herself off and uses humour as a defense machinery.
Dorsum in the machine, Dom asks why they won't be staying at Doris' begetter'due south house. She says that she's not fix to deal with that yet, and too, she's always wanted to stay at the local hotel. As a kid, she e'er admired their pool and she wants to take a swim. She won't accept much reason to ever come up back at present that her father is gone, and then she might as well brand the nearly of it. Patrick makes a quip about how gluey his legs are, considering death is meaningless. There is no before, no after, no beyond. No truth and no justice. There is just Patrick Murray.
Dom and Doris visit the funeral dwelling to encounter the body. Doris almost bails, but Dom keeps her on class past reminiscing near how they used to make out while listening to Wham! My gut tells me "Careless Whisper," but I secretly hope their teenage trysts were scored past "Order Tropicana."
Back in the car, Patrick finally makes himself useful and gives Doris a neck rub. They have a terrific sad puppy moment.
Dom drives them to the site of his dad'south sometime restaurant, which is now a donut emporium. Patrick reminisces about how he used to spend his afternoons at the local donut shop alone with a box of glazed and a copy of Out hidden inside his Sports Illustrated. Doris briefly cheers up because, while her life is sad, at least she volition never be Patrick.
When they get dorsum to the hotel, they accept a dip in the pool, where Dom and Doris reminisce virtually how they used to have sexual activity to laissez passer the time. Information technology's unconfirmed which Wham! song they played for that, but we do learn that while Dom might be a lothario nowadays, he was no great shakes at pleasing the ladies. They share a bucket of KFC, Doris gushes about how perfect Malik is being, and Patrick asks if they can go to a gay bar or at to the lowest degree a Pinkberry with gay toppings.
They caput to the nearest homosexual hotspot and so Doris tin rejuvenate her energies. She needs at least three gay men effectually her at all times, so this trip has really been draining her batteries. Patrick spots a cute guy sitting alone at the end of the empty bar and speculates nigh his sad, solitary life, projecting his own Evanescence-fueled flashbacks onto the poor fellow.
"Walking on Sunshine" comes on, and Dom and Doris dart to the dance floor. Patrick steels himself up to ask the hot young dude to dance (He'south literally listed on IMDb as "Hot Immature Dude." Way to validate, IMDb.). Unfortunately, Hot Immature Dude's boyfriend picks this moment to show upwardly and found ane on him. Oh well, Patrick. Y'all lose some, you lose some. Improve luck next time.
The bartender says he should stay til 10PM, when Kitty Leukemia does her Lady Gaga tribute prove. Before he can ask who Lady Gaga is, Patrick evaporates from his bar stool and joins his buddies on the trip the light fantastic floor. They're the only people out there, and the moment is intimate and endearing. In an episode full of ace character evolution, this dance rises above every other moment as a shining, pristine act of pure friendship in the face of loss. That'due south the magic of Modesto.
Cut to the funeral. Doris' Aunt Sarah (Mary Kay Place) gives a touching eulogy near how her begetter loved her more than anything in the world, telling a story about him attending all of Doris' swim meets. Doris trembles similar a leaf, but holds it together.
Patrick however, emphatically does non. He ducks away from the funeral grouping, wracked with sobs so loud that the neighborhood dogs begin to howl. Perhaps he'south upset that this is the first episode where he doesn't have the principal storyline. Everyone side-eyes him and continues on with the service.
At the reception, Patrick explains that this was his first ever funeral. So I guess that means he'south upset he didn't go a "My Get-go Time" sticker. Dom is stolen away by some acquaintances, so Doris and Patrick get to the golf club bar and honor her father with some scotch neats. They both gag, merely the liquor does them well. Patrick ignores a call from Kevin (Russell Tovey). Another first.
Over in the master hall, Dom is talking with an old classmate who shows him pictures of his wife and kids. Dom marvels that he never left boondocks. The chat takes an abrupt halt when the guy asks if he and Doris are married. Dom has to do that polite society thing and either come up out of the cupboard or run for the hills.
He decides to come out and his friend uncomfortably says "I love that y'all're gay." This awkward moment is the final slice of evidence in my instance to prove that the show is plagiarized from my personal diary. Dom returns to Doris and Patrick to wonder if he made a fault by leaving home. He probably didn't.
The gang heads back to the cemetery to visit Dom's father'due south grave, but they can't observe it. Dom is clearly distressed. First his dad'southward dream restaurant is converted into a dime-a-dozen apple fritter hole, so his own son forgets where he is laid to rest. He feels like his male parent's life is entirely wasted, devoid of a legacy. He laments the fact that he never even got the adventure to come out to his father.
Patrick has an idea. They drive through the graveyard and shout "I'm gay!" at all the plots, simply to make sure they got the correct one. As the car clears the gate, it's creamed by a passing truck. Mortality, y'all guys.
Dom and Doris sit down together in the hospital and I briefly worry that Patrick kicked the bucket. Simply the prove hasn't imploded yet, so I assume he's fine. Doris tells Dom that her male parent left behind some money, plenty to pay for his craven window. Dom graciously accepts. Plain the Kickstarter isn't doing that well.(Although I assume the chickendom40 Twitter business relationship is exceeding expectations.)
Patrick emerges in a sling and laments that he won't exist able to masturbate. Proficient ol' Patrick. I don't know what we would have done without you. Malik arrives at the hospital and Doris finally cracks, crumbling into his artillery. What? I'one thousand non crying. You're crying. Lauren Weedman needs an Emmy.
Malik drops Patrick off at domicile, where Kevin is waiting on the stoop. "I left Jon," says Kevin. "Jon found out about united states and broke up with me," he doesn't say. He asks if they can try things for real. Patrick says yes and they buss. And kiss. And kiss. I estimate Patrick won't have to worry near masturbating subsequently all.
I'k not sure how I feel nigh this development, considering Kevin hasn't been too reliable up until now. But for the moment I'm OK with things every bit they are. I'thousand pretty sure this unabridged episode existed to crush us into teary-eyed submission so we'd accept whatever they threw at the states in the final moments. Well, it worked.
For at present.
Fin.
Course: With a championship similar "Looking for a Plot," this episode had to be more or less perfect to avoid reviewers everywhere using that name against information technology. Luckily for everyone, information technology rose to the challenge tremendously.
This episode was harrowing, devastating, and center-pounding without sacrificing the show'south signature low-cardinal storytelling and humor. It used what could have been a gimmick to etch out detailed backstories for two of its about undervalued characters. Likewise man oh human, was information technology emotional. I'm gonna need to make a tissue run in the forenoon. And so one again in the afternoon after I show this episode to my roommate.
I think I'yard finally coming around on the episodes that don't characteristic all three of the main characters. But only if they use their run times to promote such solid explorations of the characters we are stuck with. I finally feel like I know Doris as a human being instead of a one-dimensional snark monster. Don't get me incorrect, she was bang-up at being that, simply information technology's wonderful to see her getting something raw and real to piece of work with.
One final thing. I know I was harsh on Patrick this episode, but the dude really needs to relax. My current working theory is that this whole Neurotic Nelly arc is just one long fix-upwards for one of those terrible Snickers commercials where they give him a candy bar and he calms down. Hey, don't judge. Product placement keeps the lights on.
All in all, this episode was one of the best this season and I'k happy to report that Looking treats death with dignity and poise. And a couple of loud yowls, but that tin't be helped.
A
MVG (Most Valuable Gay): I'1000 going to accept to requite this 1 to Doris, who not only endemic every scene she was in, merely too showed more chemistry with a purse of gummi worms than Patrick has had with either of his love interests.
Champion Dialogue: "How come up no i told me I had a mullet?" – Doris, expressing a universal lament upon seeing her 80's prom photograph
Contrasted Nuts
*Doris has had 17 orgasms over the past 5 days. I'm pretty certain that means she'southward legally dead.
*It turns out it's really hard to exist funny when recapping a funeral episode. Sorry, guys. But apparently next calendar week is all about that damn Top Trumps app, so you know I'mma bring my A game.
*What exactly are gay Pinkberry toppings? Nuts, I gauge? Maybe fruity pebbles? Am I eating my frozen yogurt incorrect?
*That bartender is cute! I vote we continue the show in Modesto from now on. Soapy Joe can come up too.
*"Kitty Leukemia" sounds less like a drag queen and more than like a Very Special Episode of Glee.
*Really? This is Patrick'south first funeral? I mean, good for him, but has anything happened to him in his life? He'd never gotten HIV tested, never heard of Sonny & Cher, and at present this? I'grand beginning to recollect that he burst from a pod two days earlier the airplane pilot episode and is playing things by ear.
* Do you lot have parents that you lot like? Listen to J. Chiliad. Simmons. Phone call them.
*One of my neighbors is currently diggings "Manic Monday." You didn't need to know that, but I'thou merely glad that The Bangles are notwithstanding getting some dearest.
And so what did you all recall? Was this route trip to Modesto worth the toll of gas? Or would you rather have stayed behind with Agustín and the Brit? Let united states of america know in the comments below?
